Weeds are the bane of many novice gardener's existence.
Improper mulching is often the reason.
Mulch prevents weed seeds from getting the light they need to grow. If it's too thin, they can stretch through the mulch to reach the light and then they grow like nobodys business! A thick layer of mulch will stop most weed seeds in their tracks.
Mulch should be at least 2 inches thick, 4 or even 6 inches is better.
Anywhere you have open soil, you should spread mulch to help prevent weed seeds form germinating and taking over. This includes
● AROUND NEW TREES ● GARDEN BEDS ● TRAILS ● DRIVEWAYS ● PLAY AREAS ● NATURAL AREAS
MULCH VOLCANOES ARE A NO-NO
When you spread your mulch, be sure you don't pile it up against the trunks and stems of plants. Having a little touching them is fine, but don't have 6 inches piled up on the trunk. We call these mulch volcanoes and they are bad for trees and shrubs.

So do yourself a favor: Get out in your yard this spring and put down a nice thick layer of mulch. Not only does it make your yard look nicer, but it makes things easier on you! Fewer weeds! Less watering! More productive plants!
